97 Year Old Marie Hatch Cancer Patient of Burlingame Gets Evicted after 66 Years

                                 

Living in someone else’s property and paying rent is a terrible thing. I say this because your living situation is literally at the mercy of the landlord. You don’t know when you are going to be evicted. It doesn’t matter that you have been renting for years and have been a model tent. This happened to my family in 2007. In the mail came an eviction notice out of the blue. It was because new owners and the property manager wanted the apartment we were living in. I just received a double hip replacement and was on Dialysis but that didn’t matter. We had to go. This is a common occurrence for families living in California.

When I heard about 97 year old Marie Hatch was being evicted after 66 years of tendency. It really brought back awful memories. When her landlord and friend Vivian Kruse, gave her lifetime tendency it was a good thing. Marie could live in the cottage until she died. After 66 years Kruse is dead, her daughter is dead, and her granddaughter is dead. They each passed down the lifetime guarantee of tenancy to Marie. The verbal agreement died when the granddaughter died. The new landlord said that’s why he’s evicting. I don’t believe that is the reason. He wants to get thousands of dollars instead of the 900 dollars Marie and her roommate are paying. The new landlord David Kantz says “he feels terrible that he is evicting Hatch, but the trust left behind by his wife — the third of the previous landlord women who are now deceased — expires in July, and he is duty-bound to sell the property on behalf of his two sons”. Bull, he is all about the money. This is a sad situation and it doesn’t have to be this way. What really gets me is, that the Federal guidelines indicated rent is unaffordable when it exceeds 30 percent of a household’s income. This means that in San Mateo County, a household must earn at least $106,000 to afford the average current monthly rent of $2,648 for a two-bedroom unit, according to the county study. U.S. census data show that about 35 percent of renter families in San Mateo County are paying more than 30 percent of their income for housing. This is not the only county that people are paying more than 30 percent for housing. Santa Clara County is another one. To live here in California you have to pay to breathe the air, especially living in Silicon Valley where I live. Rents are steadily going up and it is a shame. It really has me thinking about moving out of California. I refuse to pay $2,600.00 or more for the place I’m living in, it’s not worth it.

Is The Site Of The New 49ers Stadium In Santa Clara Jinxed?

On Monday October 14, 2013 there was another death in Santa Clara, at the site of the new 49ers stadium. Sixty year old Edward Erving Lake II was an employee of Gerdau Ameristeel's in Napa California. Gerdau Ameristeel's is a subcontractor working at the stadium. 

While Edward Erving Lake II was having a bundle of rebar unloaded from his truck, somehow the bundle fell and crushed him. The investigation is on going. Authorities say the job site is safe. How in the world can they say this Santa Clara job site is safe? When less than 6 months this is the second death. In June of 2013 Donald White an 63-year-old elevator mechanic was killed, when he was struck by a counterweight while working in a shaft. That investigation is still on going. Now two investigations are on going for death at the new 49ers stadium in Santa Clara. If you ask me, this job site is jinxed. Is this about the money it is generating and the money it is going to generate in the future? Is that is why authorities are saying it's a safe job sight? Santa Clara County District Attorney Jeff Rosen in the Hot Seat

My family and I had dealings with Santa Clara County District Attorney office back in December of last year. It was awful! All we were trying to do was to find out the where about and the well-being of our 4 ½ month old daughter. Her mother took her while she was under a 51/50 evaluation. Santa Clara County District Attorney’s office was a joke. We would request to talk to a supervisor and there famous line would be we’re so sorry but that person is on vacation. Some low level person would come down and say we have an investigator on it and it is going to take some time to locate the mother and the child. We went down there for 4 weeks straight and we got the run around each time.

Jeff Rosen is under-fire over an administrative leave policy he established because he felt that his supervising attorneys got the short end by their union’s last contract settlement in 2011.  Jeff Rosen okay-ed administrative leave for 15 members of his leadership team to reimburse them for the $15,000 cut in pay. He says that Santa Clara County Labor Department approved his administrative leave plan. Rosen believes the union board members knew about it too but they say they found out last October. Some ones lying I wonder who? Jeff Rosen ran for office on morals, transparency and adherence to the letter of the law. Yea Right! These politicians make me sick. They say what the people want to hear just to get elected. Then they get in office and show their true colors.

Principal at an Elementary School in Santa Clara Charged with Selling Drugs

On September 24, 2012 Principal Eric Dean Lewis, 42, was charged with six drug related crimes, including sales of methamphetamine, Ecstasy and the date-rape drug GHB, which is used in small doses as an intoxicant by those in the club scene. He was arrested September 20, 2012 at a Cal-Train station in San Francisco, where he had agreed to pick up an undercover agent he ''met'' through a gay dating website. How dumb was this educated fool? He should know you can’t trust most of the people you met on those dating sights. Eric Dean Lewis was a principal at Montague Elementary School in Santa Clara. Lewis faces a maximum sentence of eight years and four months if he is convicted. Prosecutor Daniel Rothbach said “there is no evidence that Lewis was selling or using drugs with children.” The community was shocked when they heard this news. Shawna Yacoub a parent said, "We were really quite disappointed because Mr. Lewis is quite respected here." Santa Clara Unified School District Superintendent Bobbie Plough said, "I think our hiring process is pretty thorough. We do extensive background checks, reference checks and we've never had an incident like this before."

 Eric Dean Lewis is not the only principal to be charged with trying to sell drugs to undercover officer. David Groover, principal of Partin Settlement Elementary School in Kissimmee, Fla., was arrested on June 15 after allegedly providing drugs to an undercover Sheriff's deputy. What in the world has come over our leaders in education? Are they doing this to supplement their income? Are they doing this because their addicts? You never know about what a person is into, they may look all squeaky clean but are not. Do you think they were watching too much Breaking Bad?

Morgan Hill’s Antolin Garcia-Torres Arrested for Kidnap and Murder of Sierra LaMar

Authorities arrested Morgan Hill’s Antolin Garcia-Torres on May 21, 2012, for the kidnap and murder of Sierra LaMar. Morgan Hill teen Sierra LaMar went missing on her way to school on March 16, 2012. The authorities had Antolin Garcia-Torres under-surveillance since March 28, 2012. They were gathering evidence and hoping he would lead authorities to her body. The authorities strongly believe that Sierra LaMar is dead. Authorities and volunteer are continuing to look for her body. On May 23, 2012 divers were looking in Uvas Reservoir in Santa Clara County. With the all DNA evidence against Antolin Garcia-Torres, his sister is saying "they don't have enough evidence to convict him." If it they did not have enough evidence, why was his DNA found on her clothes in the Juicy backpack and Sierra’s DNA found in his car? Did they know each other? Santa Clara County Sheriff Laurie Smith said they have no evidence that knew each other. Antolin Garcia-Torres’s DNA was in the system, because of an assault back in March 2009. In 2009 there were three assaults at the Safeway parking lot 840 E. Dunne Ave. in Morgan Hill. The suspect would enter women’s car through the drivers-side rear door. One woman said her attacker used a Taser gun to stun her, authorities believed the attacker was the same in all three cases. If this was Antolin Garcia-Torres attacking women back in 2009 it is a shame that he was not arrested back then he would have been off the streets and Sierra would have probably been a live today. As the authorities continue to search for Sierra’s body, I just hope they have the right sick S.O.B. off the streets. My prayers go out to the LaMar family.

THE VALUE OF "OLD SAYINGS"

I've made a hobby of collecting and remembering old sayings.  We hear them everyday from everywhere and by everybody--whether as coined phrases, one-liners, words to live by, or lines from a movie: 

"Hey dude let's party" helped launch Sean Penn as 'Jeff Spicoli' in "Fast Times at Ridgemont High".  'Scarlett O'hara's' "Tomorrow is another day"(Vivien Lee in "Gone With the Wind") echoed throughout my childhood. 

True, some old sayings get old fast, however,  many become thought-provoking, words of wisdom which enlighten us--as I hope this blog does for YOU!  Are you there?  Still reading? 

I got interested about 20 years ago in the office restroom of all places, where, above the urinal hung a two-foot by three-foot painting frame totally filled with hundreds of tiny sentences, each a different color, and each--an old saying!  The first was; "The journey of a thousand miles starts with but one, single step"...and the last was; "Have a nice day". 

 In between, I read hundreds of great ones over a period of bathroom visits--only a handful of which I will share!(I promise)  One night I took that painting down and started jotting them down:

"Those who talk the most have the least to say".

"A welcome guest is one who knows when to leave".

"Easy street is a blind alley"

"Those who pays too much attention to their reputation, often loose their character".

"Those who ignore the past, are condemned to repeat it".

"A person who trusts no one, should include himself".

"To truly hear you must quiet the mind".

"Trust is like money; you spend it, lend it, save it, and sometimes get robbed of it".

"A rumor is as difficult to unspread as butter".

Here are a few sales meeting motivators:

"A goal without a plan is just a wish". 

"Nobody plans to fail, they just fail to plan".

"A smooth sea never made a skillful mariner".

"A wish changes nothing, a decision changes everything".

"If a situation is constantly confusing, to solve the problem...look to the financial interest".

Then there are the love letter tools:

That last one came from my family priest, the late Reverend John Sweeny, who pastored the much known "Our Lady of Peace" Parish in Santa Clara, California.What a wonderful soul he was, an not a bad golfer.  He helped inspire me to add this next batch of quotes--all with authors.

I can't end this thing without sharing the first saying that inspired me, the worst ever written, my all-time favorite, and one I made up myself!

As a TV sports anchor-reporter some 26-years ago in Bakersfield, California, I did my first quality feature package(story) on a guy who's legs were blown off in Viet Nam--yet he lived life fuller than most! Entertaining 500 school children, Bob Weilan took batting practice sitting down with the baseball team, bench-pressed 380 pounds in the gym, and told of how he walked across the entire country on specially made hand-shoes! He also walked the LA Marathon a few years later!

I closed the feature with his final message...that the joy is truly in the journey--and that, "The only time you fail in this life, is the last time that you try". 

My favorite saying comes from the late comedian George Carlin, of all people...who wrote:"Life should not be measured by the amount of breaths we take, but by the moments that take our breath away".

The most diabolical, hypocritical saying of all still remains posted above the front gate at 'Auschwitz' death camp in Poland, where innocent millions(mostly Jews) were murdered during World War Two. It reads: (In German) "Arbeit Macht Frei"...work will set you free.

 Almost finally, Diogenes of Sinope happily wrote once:

"One original thought is worth a thousand mindless quotations". 

Nevertheless I end with an original: 

"Men have all the lines, and women have all the curves. Happy are those who can read between both".

San Jose's First Homocide of 2010

Albert Cobarrubias became San Jose's first homocide victim of 2010, after being shot to death Saturday night, while playing pool with friends in an open garage in the East Side neighborghood where he grew up.

It's just one in a long list of tragic, senseless, useless killings happening far too often, although this first incident in San Jose may prove the most tear-jerking and heart-breaking of all.

Cobarrubias graduated with honors from San Jose State University with a Bachelor of Science degree in justice studies, and held the dream of becoming a lawyer in order to fight off the social injustices of racial profiling he experienced growing up.

"Albert had two paths to choose from: the right path or the gang life", his uncle Mitch Cobarrubias said.  "He chose the right path and got his education."

"He grew up in an area that wasn't the richest or safest", said Sang Kil, one of Albert's professors at SJSU.  "Instead of distancing himself, he embraced it and was going to help!  That's what was so beautiful about Albert". 

Saturday night, after watching his beloved Sharks whip the Sabres 5-2 on T.V., Cobarrubias went to a friends house to shoot pool at the 2700 block of Chopin Avenue just south of Eastridge Mall, when shots rang out about 11pm.  According to Albert's uncle, a strange car stopped in front of the home and someone got out from the passenger side, walked up the driveway and opened fire...killing Cobarrubias.

"It's just a random act of violence," said Mitch Cobarrubias.  "Albert was not into gangs.  he was educated.  It was a case of mistaken identity."  Albert's family and friends concur that he had no gang ties, and San Jose Police maintain a tight-lipped investigation into a crime outcome that seems more ironic than slitting one's throat on a first aid kit!

Countless, upstanding young citizens like Cobarrubias  who focus on solving society's problems, continue to end up dying because of them!  All  Albert wanted to do was go to Santa Clara Law School and fight for a better, safer society.  So what if he shaved his head, wore baggy clothes, body tatoos and drove an older model, beat up Buick?

He finished highschool, joined the Marine Corp. Reserves, put himself through college working full-time at a paint store, volunteered his weekends at criminal justice clinics and neighborhood watches, publilshed praised research papers on the realities and possible solutions for racial profiling, and  the hurdles he faced growing up in East San Jose.

Why did a happy, smart young man who is loved by family, friends, professors and leaders alike, have to fall to a senseless bullet, fired by some low-life, yellow bellied, scum-bag, street punk with a single-diget IQ and an itchy trigger finger?

No one said life was fair, however, we can still keep Albert's dream alive by fighting to end social injustice, and by putting an end to freedom for sub-human criminals like the one who took him from us!

Also, San Jose Pastor Sonny Lara, a longtime gang prevention and intervention activist, is holding a prayer vigil for Albert Tuesday at 7pm outside the steps of San Jose City Hall!

California is a beautiful place to live. I am a native Californian I lived on the  East Coast for a year the people I met there, always asked me how do you deal with the earthquakes. I would say you get use to them, and hopefully your prepared with your earthquake kits. California has been having earthquakes for the last two weeks. A 4.1 magnitude earthquake hit the Calaveras fault near Milpitas causing minor damage on January 7, 2010.
 A  6.5 magnitude earthquake hit Eureka on January 9, 2010 causing $18 million dollars in damage and a 3.6 earthquake hit Humbolt County causing no damage. The disaster in Haiti is tragic, let us here in California be prepared. You may need to survive on your own after an emergency. This means having your own food, water, and other supplies in sufficient quantity to last for at least three days. Local officials and relief workers will be on the scene after a disaster, but they cannot reach everyone immediately. You could get help in hours, or it might take days.
In addition, basic services such as electricity, gas, water, sewage treatment, and telephones may be cut off for days, or even a week or longer.
Recommended Items to Include in a Basic Emergency Supply Kit:

GUN CARRYING PROTESTERS The Bill Of Rights, our Second Amendment, “A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the People to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed”. Ok this is our right, but some of these people carrying guns to the protest where the President is speaking are a little overboard. Why do they have to carry guns to a protest? Don’t these people know that they are making people nervous; they are also inciting people to possible act violent. In all my days I have not seen any protesters, protesting a Presidential speaking engagement where people are openly carrying guns. What does giving 100-percent really mean? What do people REALLY mean when they say they're giving 100-percent and more? We hear it all the time in motivational speeches and at sales meetings..."I'm going to give it 110-percent"or, "I demand no less than a 100-percent from everyone"!

But, how is 100-percent measured? Let's turn to a simple math formula worked out many years ago by two college math professors with more than 80-years of experience between them.

ROLLER COASTERS ACCIDENTS Being a person who loves roller coasters, has me wondering are they really safe as they can be . Great America in Santa Clara Ca. had a problem on Monday August 10, 2009 with a roller coaster called Vertigo. This similar thing happened back in April 2000, in the same year a boy fell from the Drop Zone roller coaster. I started going to Great America when it first open in the late 70’s. I’ve rode the Vertigo 5 times through out the years. There have been consumer complaints on roller coasters accidents and fatalities throughout this nation over the years.
